Itunu Oyewale
b. 1991
Itunu Oyewale (1991 till date) is perhaps known for his stylistic approach, blending African idoms into the European classical style—an idea he shared with several
of his contemporaries. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Itunu has had the opportunity to school and work with the three major tribes of Nigeria (Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa), which influences his compositional style and technique. His musical studies led him to graduate from University of Nigeria, Nsukka with a degree in music theory and composition (2008-2012). He further continued his studies at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Nigeria, to earn a master’s degree in the same field (2021).
Beyond music composition, Itunu is also a prolific flautist, percussionist and keyboardist. He is a promoter of African music, contributing several of his works for stage recitals at various music societies and programs such as; The Bridge Concert III (A Black History Month Concert), Music society of Nigeria (Muson), Department of music; Osiele University of Education, the Foundation choir and orchestra, amongst others. His most well-known piano work is almost certainly Atewo- an African dance for piano, other of his compositions includes piano works,
solo works for violin, flute, voice, choral works, instrumental works (for strings and brass
ensemble) and orchestral pieces. He is currently a music practitioner as an educationist, a music conductor, a performer, a
publisher and a composer. He is a lover of art works, innovations and creativity at its reach. He is an excellent teacher who is always willing to learn at all times.
